Multiple Domain Names
Often, when purchasing the domain name for your site, you may be compelled to purchase similar domain names, such as yourdomain.com, yourdomain.net, yourdomain.org, etc. This is perfectly fine and tends to help you gain an immediate hold of your site’s brand identity before it ever comes into debate. However, what effect does this have for SEO?
The best way to approach this situation is to choose the domain that will receive the most attention and direct traffic. This will usually be your .com domain name. Plan on setting up your site on this domain while setting up a different site for all the others. Don’t worry; you won’t have to make two websites. The only thing you want to set up on your other server is a 301 redirect to your website. Thus, whenever someone surfs to yourdomain.biz, they’ll be permanently and seamlessly redirected to yourdomain.com.
The importance of this, besides ensuring the complete online ownership of your brand, lies in diversity of links. When and if your site becomes popular, it will receive inbound natural links from many sources. Some of these may mistype your domain name. If you include a 301 redirect from the mistyped domains, your main site will still receive the credit.
