Sunny Day, According to My Computer

I am often surprised when I leave from work and find that it’s a pleasant, sunny day outside. Why this surprises me, I really couldn’t say. Perhaps it’s just a stark contrast to the flourescent, temperature-controlled atmosphere of the office. I tend to forget that the world is a vibrant, beautiful place outside the confines of work. After spending eight hours indoors without so much as a glimpse out the window, I suppose this mentality is unavoidable.

It makes me wonder sometimes what people like myself might be missing. We get too immersed in business and technology, in the artificiality of virtual worlds and economies. It makes us forget that there’s a whole world out there waiting to be experienced. Still, work is work, and many of us are limited to online weather services that tell us whether it’s sunny or rainy outside. Sometimes I dream of how nice it would be to have a desk with a view of the sky.

Of course, I’m not about to get up in arms on the subject. My life on the computer means too much to me to give up. I just can’t help but think what I might be missing, though. After all, we esteem information technology for making us “connected.” But, when you need your computer to tell you it’s a sunny day outside, aren’t you really just disconnected from the real world?
