The Secret’s Out

The word on the grapevine at work is that my boss, who has undoubtedly taken notice of my liberal use of paid time off recently, has started to read my website. Naturally, this means he is aware of my job hunting activities and the extent to which I have been fed up with my current work situation. I don’t suppose it’s such a bad thing, as he was bound to reach this conclusion one way or another.

As might be expected, bringing this information to my wife’s attention met with some concern. After all, what’s to keep him from firing me on the spot if he knows I’m going to quit anyway? I’ve never put much faith that my good cause contract would protect from this sort of arbitrary dismissal. “Good cause” is, of course, a subjective thing, and he could always cite dozens of perfectly valid but finicky reasons to justify firing me.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter that much at this point. I figure it’s only a matter of days until I get a job offer. I can’t imagine how I wouldn’t, considering I’m such a good fit at the jobs for which I’ve been interviewing. I don’t plan on quitting prematurely, of course, but I don’t think I’ll be jobless for very long if the decision is out of my hands.

Given that there isn’t much I can do to change things at this point, I’ll just continue working as long as I’m employed here. Bills need to be paid, after all, and moving is going to be costly. As much as I’d love to walk out of here and never return, it just wouldn’t be the responsible thing to do. I can do no less for my wife and son, and staying at a job I hate for a little while longer certainly isn’t going to kill me.
