The Search is Over
For a few weeks now, I’ve been telling my family with a sort of morbid humor that the only item on my Christmas list was a new job. As it turns out, that’s exactly what I’m getting. After several months of searching, the employers for whom my wife and I had been hoping finally decided to step forward and make an offer. I realize it’s just coincidence, but good holiday fortune like this makes me wonder if Santa isn’t real after all.
Our excitement comes from more than just a renewed source of income, however. We’ll be going apartment-hunting tomorrow right after the papers are all signed, which comes as a welcome activity after living with family for more than a year. As they say, though, it’s always hard when you first start out on your own, and I hope that we’ve already seen the worst of it.
I am particularly looking forward to the proximity that this will give us to our families. My new job will situate us at a very convenient middle ground, not so far that we couldn’t take a day trip and visit but not so close as to make visits so common that they cease to be special. It’s a wonderfully happy medium, and I can’t wait to start seeing my brother on a regular basis again.
Of course, I plan to make the most out of my new job. I have already ascertained that the company, coworkers, and compensation are all far superior to my previous situation. With any luck, I’ll be settling in for a good, long tenure. There is little that I hate more than looking for a job, after all, so I have no desire to return to the employment pool any time soon.
Whatever the case, my wife and I will be busy tomorrow with contracts, apartments, and hopefully some last-minute Christmas shopping now that I know we can afford it. What with the recency of the news, we haven’t announced it to my family just yet. It should come as a welcome surprise this weekend when we do. All the better to make everyone’s holiday a little cheerier.
