Problems of Heredity

I woke up this morning with a mild migraine, perhaps the third I’ve had this week. Thankfully, I’ve had them for so long that I have developed a system to deal with them. As soon as I feel one coming on, I pop two Excedrin Migraine and all is well. Unfortunately, if I don’t catch them quickly enough, I end up completely debilitated by excruciating pain.

It’s a problem I’ve had to deal with for my whole life. I inherited migraine problems from my mother’s side of the family. I’m thankful that I don’t get them as bad as she does. I get laid up by one for a day at the most. I remember her being disabled for days at a time, even on prescription pain-killers. Still, they can be very inconvenient at times.

I guess I really don’t have a lot to complain about. The only two big problems that I inherited were migraines and near-sightedness. You can probably add diabetes to that list, but I don’t have to deal with that one just yet. I’ve known people who had much bigger problems from their genes. I had a friend in high school who was alergic to eggs, wheat, milk, and a plethora of other things, making him an involuntary vegan. My genetic problems seem pretty insignificant by comparison.

Oh well, the lesson here is not to be dissatisfied with your heredity, because it could always be worse. There are people that die young or live their entire lives in pain and misery. Those of us with minor complaints really ought to look at them before thinking we have it bad.
