Overworked and Underpaid
I looked through the news on Slashdot this morning and came across a listing of average salaries for the information technology industry. This made me curious, so I decided to do some searching on the web to find out what the general concensus was. According to the rest of the world, how much is my job worth?
As it turns out, a lot, or, at least, a lot more than I’m earning. I passed my findings along to my coworkers, which started something of a quiet uproar. We’re being paid less than half of what we’re supposed to be earning, and the work load is only getting heavier. Needless to say, the situation has engendered even more discontent than usual.
The plan now appears to be everyone looking for work and passing references on to everyone else. I put forward the rather humorous idea of selling our entire department on eBay, which could just be crazy enough to work. I for one would be happy to collaborate with them on the job hunt. After all, there might just be a company out there willing to hire us all and pay us what we’re worth.
