Laziness
My coworkers and I were engaged in an interesting discussion yesterday about personality disorders and the like. One, who is himself something of a hypochondriac, believed all of the symptomology of one described him perfectly. I calmly tried to explain that being lazy (which was the symptom he seemed to be focused on) was not a disorder.
It is a fact that Antisocial Personality Disorder, the defining characteristic of which could be summed up as incorrigible criminality, cannot be used as a legal defense in court. It would be the same as saying, “I can’t be held accountable for being a criminal because I happen to have a criminal personality.” I believe the same should apply to laziness, specifically, that people who are lazy by nature shouldn’t be able to use it as an excuse.
I always say that people choose their own misery, and this is no exception. My wife told me the other day that she was tired of being lazy. I told her that there’s nothing to it but to do it. Nobody can make you get off your butt and do what needs to get done. You either have to choose to change or accept things the way they are. Given that she spent all yesterday cleaning, I’m inclined to say that she’s made the correct choice.
I guess all it takes sometimes is a bit of renewed resolve. She and I both have fallen off the horse when it comes to going to the gym. I thought that our motto, “No excuses,” would work out, but it seems we stopped making excuses and just chose not to go anyway. I guess I’ll try not to choose my own misery later today and get in there during my lunch break. Far be it for me to be a hypocrite and not take my own advice that laziness is never an acceptable excuse.
