The Journey of Parenthood

Okay, so it turns out that my recent blog renovations aren’t complete after all. I started by changing the photo album from a static page into a new blog category for my wife. The immediate afterthought, of course, was, “Why not do it for the whole section?” After all, the subject matter is already here; I just have to switch it over to a blog format.

Following that line of logic, Parenting is one of two new categories that I’ll be adding as I retire my Family section throwbacks. As the title of this post implies, I think of parenting as something of a journey. You don’t know exactly where it will take you or what you’ll encounter along the way, but you’re sure from the get-go that it won’t be easy. Incidentally, I would have used the term “trek,” but I’d rather not invite the sci-fi jokes. ;)

I’ve been a parent for less than two years now and I’ve already dealt with a lot. One fact of parenthood that I’m sure will be as true in years to come as it is now is this: The experience of parenthood never gets easier, only different. When my son was in diapers, I wished for nothing more than him being a little more mobile and self-sufficient. Now that he’s a toddler, I just wish he’d sit still and stop messing with things. It’s the little trade-offs like this that make parenting a real paradox.

With any luck, I’ll manage to make something interesting of this section. My wife will certainly be getting her two cents in from time to time; if anything, she gets to be a parent more often than I do. I doubt we’ll be making any earth-shattering breakthroughs, of course, but, with all the little lessons our son teaches us, you can bet it’ll be entertaining if nothing else.
