The Adventure Begins

I bought World of Warcraft last weekend primarily as a way to spend time with my brother and feed my starving need for fantasy. Of course, there was also an element of personal fascination as well. In college, I was a big fan of Final Fantasy XI. I also recently discovered that a good number of my coworkers were already playing the game. Thus, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was as fun as I suspected.

It took forever to get the game running on my computer, as must be expected for any game that comes on five separate installation CDs. I had expected a hefty delay, considering Final Fantasy XI took nearly half a day to download patches even after it had been installed. Still, nobody likes to be kept waiting. I always feel like a kid impatiently watching the clock in the wee hours of Christmas morning, willing it to tick faster.

Thankfully, I already had a good idea of what to expect and how I should set things up thanks to conversations with my brother and coworkers. I am now the proud owner of a gnome mage named Brodix on the Shadow Council server, which has been somewhat misleadingly dubbed a “roleplaying” server. I have yet to see much roleplaying actually occur. Still, I didn’t choose it because of its title.

My first experiences on the game were good ones. I started out in Coldridge Valley killing pesky critters that higher-level characters would deign to call monsters. It wasn’t long before I had received my first few addictive doses of level gain, spells, and equipment. In the past week, I’ve played every day for perhaps three or four hours a day on average, and just last night achieved 15th level.

I’ll be posting whatever useful information, humorous stories, and other World of Warcraft-related tidbits I manage to find on this blog. If you have an RSS aggregator, I invite you to subscribe to the feed; I promise it’ll be worthwhile read, even if you’re a seasoned veteran. If you have information to contribute (e.g. game information, resource links, etc.), feel free to drop a comment.
