Warforged Components I

March 13, 2006Stephen Ward

I must tip my hat to the folks who created the Eberron D&D campaign setting, because they managed to come up with some very exciting options for character creation. Lately, I’ve been hard at work creating components for my new warforged artificer. The combination of a living construct who specializes in magic item creation is absolutely brilliant, and provides a great outlet for creative players like me. Here is a sample of my most recent ideas, geared primarily toward the lower-level end of the spectrum.

Bands of Resistance (Attached Component): These interlocking hoops of leather are inscribed with runes of protection. They meld into the torso of a warforged, occupying space on the body as a vest and conferring the wearer a +1 to +5 resistance bonus on all saving throws.

Faint abjuration; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, resistance, creator’s caster level must be at least three times the bands’ bonus; Price 1,000 gp. (+1), 4,000 gp. (+2), 9,000 gp. (+3), 16,000 gp. (+4), 25,000 gp. (+5); Weight 1 lb.

Faceplate of Disguise (Attached Component): This nondescript metal mask fuses seamlessly to the face of a warforged. It allows its wearer to alter his or her appearance as with a disguise self spell. Many warforged find faceplates of this sort useful for concealing their construct nature, often choosing to appear as ordinary humanoids clad in heavy armor so as not to draw attention to the noise of their composite plating.

Faint illusion; CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item, disguise self; Price 1,800 gp.; Weight 1 lb.

Greaves of Striding (Attached Component): These alloyed steel legplates attach to the feet and shins of a warforged’s composite plating, granting a +10 enhancement bonus to the user’s base land speed.

Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Craft Wondrous Item, longstrider; Price 2,000 gp.; Weight 2 lbs.

Temperate Core (Embedded Component): This tiny metallic sphere radiates a chill aura in warm environments and gives off heat in the cold. It can be absorbed into the body of a warforged, wherein it acts as a potent temperature regulator. This affords the user continuous protection from harsh climates as if by an endure elements spell.

Faint abjuration; CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item, endure elements; Price 2,000 gp.

Vambrace of Arming (Attached Component): This steel arm guard can be attached to the forearm of a warforged, occupying the same space as a bracer. As a free action, the vambrace can be used to conjure one of three melee weapons at the wearer’s option. The creator chooses these weapons at the time of the vambrace’s construction, after which time the selections cannot be changed (for a randomly-generated vambrace, roll three times on Table 7-11: Common Melee Weapons in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, disregarding duplicates). The conjured weapon comes into being in the wearer’s hand. At any point thereafter, the wearer may dismiss the weapon or change it out for a different weapon as a free action once per round.

The vambrace does not confer proficiency upon the wearer to use the weapons it conjures. A conjured weapon that leaves the wearer’s hand by being dropped, hurled, disarmed, etc. vanishes one round later. All weapons conjured by the vambrace are considered masterwork in quality. It is possible to further enchant the bracer with any special ability or enhancement bonus that can be placed upon a weapon, in which case these bonuses are conferred upon any weapon it conjures. However, if a conjured weapon is ever destroyed, the vambrace itself is likewise ruined.

Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Item, fabricate, major creation, creator must have 10 ranks in Craft (weaponsmithing); Price 11,000 gp.

Vambrace of Shielding (Attached Component): This steel arm guard can be attached to the forearm of a warforged, occupying the same space as a bracer. As a free action, the vambrace can be used to conjure a buckler, heavy steel shield, or tower shield at the wearer’s option. The conjured shield comes into being properly secured to the wearer’s arm. At any point thereafter, the wearer may dismiss the shield or change it out for a different shield as a free action once per round.

The vambrace does not confer shield proficiency upon the wearer. Additionally, the wearer suffers all of the normal penalties associated with using a masterwork shield of the appropriate type, including armor check penalty and encumbrance. It is possible to further enchant the bracer with any special ability or enhancement bonus that can be placed upon a shield, in which case these bonuses are conferred upon any shield it conjures. However, if a conjured shield is ever destroyed, the vambrace itself is likewise ruined.

Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Item, fabricate, major creation, creator must have 10 ranks in Craft (armorsmithing); Price 10,500 gp.

Winged Glider (Attached Component): This pair of mechnical wings is crafted from overlapping sheets of metal held together by articulating mithril joints. The apparatus can be affixed to the back of a warforged, occupying space as a cloak, and folds flat beneath the back plate of the user’s composite plating while not in use. The wings can be unfurled as an immediate action to slow the user’s descent during a fall, affording the same protection as a feather fall spell. Additionally, with a running start, the user can elect to glide rather than fall straight down. While gliding, the user gains a fly speed of 20 ft. (clumsy) but must descend at least half as many feet as he travels in any particular round. It is impossible to ascend under the glider’s own power, although it may be possible to do so in strong winds, at the DM’s discretion.

Faint transmutation; CL 4th; Craft Wondrous Item, feather fall, levitate; Price 5,000 gp.
