Lord of the Rings Trilogy

January 2, 2004Stephen Ward

A good series of movies for any normal person, and an absolute must for anyone like my nerdy friends and I. I read the books a few years ago and wasn’t thoroughly impressed. The story is far too complicated, especially on the history of the Ring, and the writing was made for a pre-television attention span. The Lord of the Rings movies, however, solved both of those problems by simplifying the storyline and condensing it into a mere ten hours of film, which was painfully brief to those of us in love with the genre.

I think all the awards and praise speak for themselves when it comes to the Lord of the Ring trilogy. Having a long-standing infatuation with magic and wizards, my favorite character by far was Gandalf. He represents the Merlin archetype from which all other mythological wizards are derived. I was a little disappointed not to see him hurling lightning and death like he did in the books, but his fight with the Balrog was priceless. “Smote his ruin on the mountainside” is right.

All in all, I’d say the movies lived up to expectations, although I wonder what J.R.R. Tolkien would say if he were alive to see them. Would he be thrilled to tears to see his stories come to life, or would he be angry that an elven army marched into Helm’s Deep where they ought not to have been? I have a feeling he wouldn’t nitpick quite as much as some of my friends have, especially when he saw the amount of money grossed by the trilogy. All aspiring writers should be so lucky to father a multi-billion dollar genre.

i absolutely loved this trilogy, because it is sad and has action and comedy all at the same time. oh yea and Orlando Bloom was sexy in this movie with his blond hair, and how quick he was with his bow.
